Runescape - The Best of the Free Online RPGs?

A couple of months ago Kotaku listed the top ten mmorpgs. At number 3 on that list was Runescape with over 5 million subscribers. Wow, 5 million subscribers from a free online rpg. Given Runescape 2001 graphics, I find it hard to believe that Runescape is the most popular free online rpg, but people love it.

If you are a fan of free online rpgs, I encourage you to check it out. One of the biggest downfalls of a lot of free online rpgs is that they don't have enough players and the world seems empty. You will not find Runescape to be that way. With 5 million players Runescape is active and vibrant.

Sword of the New World - More Free Online RPGs

Sword of the New World just became another alternative for us fans of free online rpgs. K2's Sword of the New World has been free to download and free to play up to level 20. Now it will be a totally free online mmorpg.

When this game came out I was very interested in playing it, but was discouraged when I heard the negative reviews. Now with it joining the other free online rpgs, I will have to give it a try. I hear that it has a pretty cool system where you control three players at one time.

Here is a the trailer for Sword of the New World.

Duels.com - Not Like Your Typical Free Online RPGs

Today I discovered more free online rpgs. I would like to tell you about Duels.com. Duels.com is not a complex and involved as other free online rpgs, but it is kind of addictive in its own way. In duels.com, you create your character like in other games and then challenge other characters to duels. Hence the name!!

There does not seem to be much skill involved in the duels. In fact it seems like you have no actual control of the duels. However, it is kind of fun to challenge people and try to take them down. Additionally, there are quests and you do gain levels as you gain experience.

Here is a video of the fighting.

Who Doesn't Love More Free Online RPGs?

Today I have learned about more free online RPGs. This time it is NC Soft's Dungeon Runners. Dungeon Runners is free to download and free to play, but if you want access to all of its content, there is a $4.95 monthly fee.

NC Soft describes the game features as,

  • free to load and play*.
  • Three character classes: Fighter, Mage, or Ranger. Each can learn powerful magic and deadly weapon skills.
  • Progress in power as you gain levels and acquire new treasures.
  • Some dungeons can be completed quickly, rewarding those who can only invest 15 minutes a play session. Greater dungeons, however, will provide a deep, rich, questing experience for those who want to go on longer runs or multi-part quests.
  • Easy to control with either ‘WASD’ or point and click combat and movement.
  • Adventure alone or join with online friends to form your own band of heroes.
  • Undertake quests to rid the world of unspeakable horrors and legions of enemies.
  • Gather in the public area of Townston, and then quickly hop into a new adventure in your very own instanced dungeon.
  • Become a legend. Bask in the limelight as your powers, equipment, and influence grow with each successful quest and every fallen foe.
  • Randomly generated dungeons may contain any number of special rooms, different monster encounters and more! Each dungeon is always fresh, providing limitless re-playability.
  • Game content will continually grow: new maps, monsters, powers, and much, much more!
  • Literally thousands of magic weapons, items, and armor to discover!
  • Dungeon Runners will always be free to download and play, however, choose to become a member* and you’ll have access to the most powerful in-game items and a growing list of members-only privileges.
While most free online rpgs do not include any reoccuring monthly fees, I am still excited about this game because it is free to download and can be played with without a monthly fee.

More Free Online RPGs – Archlord

Codemasters has just announced that Archlord will be added to the list of free online RPGs. In addition to having no reoccuring monthly fee, Archlord will also be free to download. This is awesome. Archlord was released retail in February 2007, but it experienced one of the worst game launches in history. With Everquest 2 releasing its Echoes of Faydwer expansion in November 2006 and World of Warcraft releasing the Burning Crusades expansion in January 2007, Archlord did not have a chance.

Ed Relf, Director of Marketing at Codemasters said, "We are ecstatic to be in a position now to release ArchLord as an entirely FREE MMORPG and this marks a milestone in the games ongoing development. Since its release, ArchLord has grown consistently and we are excited to throw open the doors to players across N.America and Europe looking to play a premium 100% FREE MMORPG. " You can download the game client here.

However, now us lovers of free online RPGs will get a chance to revisit this game.

Fury – Add Another MMORPG to the List of Free Online RPGs

Gamecock just unveiled that its upcoming mmorpg, Fury, will be added to the list of free online rpgs. While you will still have to pay for the box at retail or via direct download, you will not have to pay a reoccurring monthly fee to play this free online rpg. Free online rpgs are becoming a viable business model. Add, it is good new for gamers that Gamecock has decided to add Fury to the list of free online rpgs. However, Fury will also include subscription content for non-casual players. It will be interesting to see how much content will be made available for free versus the subscription model. Fury is expected to be released in October 2007.

One of the cool features about Fury is that it will be a PVP centric mmorpg. To date, few mmorpgs have centered around pvp. Instead, most have focused on the normal player versus environment content. However, in Fury, the quests and leveling will be pvp based. Fury will also include an innovative pvp ladder system that will rank players based upon their pvp skill.

Here is the trailer for Fury. More free online rpgs for us to enjoy.
